The Somerville Museum Presents: Time Marches On: Postcards and the Poetry of the Local

No art form so consistently celebrates a sense of place as does the postcard. Introduced in the last decade of the 19th Century postcards were expressions of what made each community unique. While some postcards were commercial, promoting such things as restaurants, motels, and gas stations, the majority were portraits of an area’s specialness, mirrors held up to reaffirm who we are.
For Somerville, this meant the Powder House, the Tower on Prospect Hill, the library and the high school, the monument to the soldiers and sailors of the Civil War. Today they remind us once again of the pride of place that living in Somerville continues to instill. “Time Marches On” – opening at the Somerville Museum on May 21, 2020 – will be an in-depth exploration of this special relation between history, place and the postcard.
